ONE-ON-ONE

LIVE-STREAMING

STAY IN YOUR PAJAMAS

camera class

Earlier this year we began offering our beginner Get Out of Auto camera class at our studio in Westport… and then March of 2020 hit. C’mon… you know what we’re talking about. The toilet paper crisis… the time when sneezing in public no longer got you a “God bless you,” but now got you the evil eye.

Since gathering folks in our studio is no longer an option for the moment, we wanted to figure out how we could still offer this great class for people who are ready to learn their DSLR cameras and figure out what all those other mysterious modes are other than Auto mode.

What we came up with was the exact same class… Well, the same class, but with one huge beneficial change… live-streamed straight to you, online. The bad news, no in-person hugs or high fives, but the good news is it is now ONE-ON-ONE… technically, one-on-two if Mike chooses to wear pants during this stay-at-home social distancing thing and we let him online.

We can now dedicate these full 2 hours to only YOU, and you alone. We can pace and customize the class based on where you’re at in your photography journey! We can field any questions that pop up (we hope you have plenty because we LOVE questions) during the class. And now, there’s no need to worry about that nervousnes that pops up when asking questions in front of the larger classes.

Learn to take more control over your DSLR camera so you don't miss any special family moments

Were you super excited when you first got your DSLR camea? But, after a few tries realized, “wow, this is harder than I thought,” and stuck it in Auto? It’s ok. We’ve all done it – no judgement here. Maybe you chose Auto because the pictures you were getting were too dark, too blurry from them moving, or just… boring?

During your live online class, you’ll be learning about the variety of settings on your camera to not only help you fix those dark and blurry photos of your kids frolicking, but to finally understand the why and how behind consistently great images.

Do you love seeing those pictures with the beautiful blurred out background of trees or lights? You’ll learn how to do that! Or maybe there’s just something about a photo you saw where you just love it… but couldn’t put your finger on why? We will work with you and the techniques and thought processes to give your images a bit more pop!

What’s great is that after attending your one-on-one class you’ll have permanent access to us via access to our Facebook Photo Class Community group. Once in the group, you will be able to chat and learn from other class attendees as well as always be able to get continued help from us in your growth. There will be fun assignments to practice your skills and post your results along with others in the group. This is a great class for anyone who wants to take higher quality and more compelling photos of their kids and families!

WELL, GOOD. PULL UP A CHAIR AND READ ON... CUZ WE'VE GOT ANSWERS.

How long have you guys been around?

We’ve been shooting kiddos and family portraits since 2007. We began the crazy adventure of shooting weddings in 2009. In 2018, we stepped away from the name ‘JSi Photography’ to ‘MIKE + JULIE |  storytellers’.

What is The UNportrait Experience?

One photographer will come spend 1, 2, or 3 hours with you (your choice), very likely your home, and document your day, hunting for storytelling moments. We’ll artfully and honestly photograph your norm. What’s even cooler is that we’ll dive into what is meaningful to YOU so that on the day we’re there, we’re armed with what matters most to you to have in photographs. In your final collection of images, you’ll see the big stuff that happened while we were there, the small details that hold SO much backstory for your family, and the connections between family members that are all too familiar. We’re aiming to capture the type of connections that happen naturally when no one is telling you how to pose or act.

What is a BIRTHday story?

This session is somewhere between having birth photography and newborn portraits. This session is perfect for you if you don’t prefer to have every step of the birthing process documented, but you still really want to have the rawness of your new little one captured. We want to photograph what those first few moments of being parents were like. There is nothing like those first hours as new parents. The first moment you both have to yourselves with this little nugget, as new parents. The first moment your kiddos meet their new little brother or sister. The first time your mom holds her grandchild.

Won’t you run out of things to photograph? My life’s so boring…

We dare you to think your life is boring once we’re done with ya. We can’t wait for you to see what we catch. There is nothing boring about your life. Even if it’s a normal “boring” day, you’ll be amazed at how much each and every image means to you because it’s you: your people, your home, your memories, your life.

I really want photos, but I hate my (skin, body, weight, fill in the blank).

I know. I really, really know. I (Julie) am a perfectionist and it used to be that when I saw a picture of myself I always found something that made me look terrible. My mom tends to be the same way. She always shoos the camera away, so I don’t have many photos of her. Then one day it hit me. Someday, she won’t be here. How many photos do I have of her?? Do I have enough? Do I have any of us together… not just from when I was little? The answer was a solemn ‘no’. I don’t have enough photos of her. I’d rather have a billion less than perfect images of her than none at all. Never ever forget that YOU are someone else’s world and they deserve to have photos of you, in all your imperfect glory!

I’m all in, but my hubby hates photo sessions.

Perfect! We don’t like normal photo sessions either! Tell your hubby that we will never make him wear something he doesn’t want to and we’ll never ever force him to smile for the camera. He is free to watch TV in his favorite old ratty T-shirt, tinker around in the garage, or daddy-ing it up wrestling with the kiddos. We want to see and document what you love to see him doing all the time!

Y’all. I’ve got wild children. What if they don’t behave at the session?

We’re going to be a novelty to the kiddos for about the first 20 minutes we’re there, and we’re ready for that. But then… once they realize we’re not asking them to sit still or say ‘cheese’, they’ll lose interest in us and go on with their day. By the end of our time together, we’ll feel like one of the family, pinky swear!

How do we decide on a location for this experience?

The first thing we’ll do is dive in and take a walk down memory lane. If at the end of our brainstorming, your memories are centered around your home, then that’s where we’ll suggest. If your memories are centered around places that mean something to your family then that’s exactly where we need to document you! One thing we won’t do is choose a location that doesn’t have any significant meaning for you.

What should we wear?

What would you pick out on a random Tuesday? What is comfortable and makes you feel great when you have it on? Here’s a fun idea: let your kiddos pick out their own outfits. As long as y’all GOT clothes on, we’re happy!

What would I do with my documentary photos?

This is a great question! What is your family’s go-to memory style? Are you guys a scrapbook type family? One of our photo books would be perfect. Do you love to pull out the family’s box of old photographs and pour over every one? Our keepsake box filled with loose photographs is totally your jam. Bonus! You can add memories to this box over time. Or, perhaps your walls are aching for some coverage. We have 6 wall collections to choose from!

Do you offer digitals?

Yep, we sure do. You can purchase one individual file, a bundle, or the whole kit and caboodle! But, for these types of images, we think to have something physical to hold in your hands and pass on to your family matters. That’s why our UNportrait Experience automatically comes with a custom photo book!

Can you photograph my event?

We love capturing birthday parties (moms, this is YOUR chance to set the camera down and enjoy the party for once), anniversary parties, fundraisers, awards ceremonies, luncheons, and weddings (duh!). Basically, anytime humans gather together something good is bound to happen and be worth remembering. That’s where we step in! The best way to get more info is to fill out our contact form so we can send you a custom quote.

How do I book one of your documentary experiences?

Your date/time is reserved on our calendar once your contract is signed and your session fee is paid.

What if I have to reschedule?

Payment of your session fee reserves that day and time. So, when you can’t make it, no one else gets that spot either. But, we totally understand that life just happens. You get one complimentary reschedule. After that, if you still need to reschedule there is a $75 rescheduling fee.

What happens after you document my family?

This is when the agonizing wait begins! We’ll rush back to our office and prepare your images while you sit back and relax, knowing you’ve completed the hardest part. You’ll come in for your very own personal ordering session at the M+J Studio. This is when you’ll see your images for the first time, get acquainted with all your product options, and place your order. Don’t forget that The UNportrait Experience comes with a book! We’ll guide you through completing your book design. IN FACT…. we’ll help you every step of the way to prepare for your ordering session, pinky promise.
