THE
REAL
THING

You might be asking yourself, “What is a documentary session?” or even, “What in my “everyday” life would be worth having someone photograph?” A documentary session with us, in its simplest terms, is a session that highlights, memorializes, and safeguards it all, the big and not-so-big moments in your life. We feel a yearly posed family photo just doesn’t quite do your family the justice it deserves. Yes, it is a great representation of what you look like at a given time. What that portrait will never do is remind you of what life was actually like, or better yet, how it felt.

Think about it like this. Is there anything about your life you wish you could remember without the risk of forgetting all the little details? Super quick: make a list of 3 people in your life that mean something to you. Now write down a few of your favorite memories related to each one. Next, circle the memories where you have photos that really illustrate those memories where when you look back on them you’re pulled right back into that moment.

Think of these images as an insurance policy for your memories.

Think of this collection of images as an insurance policy for the future. Yes, you’re going to LOVE these images now. But later… they will have immeasurably increased in value. Just pull out any picture from your own childhood and you instantly know the value of seeing now what you felt then.

Years down the road you won’t remember what breakfast with your 4 and 5-year-old was like, the bare feet in superhero pajamas, the morning snuggles, the cereal on the floor. It will all change and you hope you’ll never forget how it felt today, but you might. But, what if you busted out a pile of photographs and each one contains a whole world of memories and feelings you’d lost touch with? Wouldn’t that be worth having?

BIRTHday

story

{$650 plus tax}

1 photographer will come to the hospital, the day of or the day after and spend 30-45 minutes documenting everyone’s first moments meeting your new baby, or a quiet session for just mom, dad, and baby. This is a documentary experience as opposed to a portrait session. Nothing matches the emotions of your first moments as this little one’s parents! You receive a final gallery of 20-30 digital negatives and print release. See a real-life example of our signature BIRTHday stories HERE.

WELL, GOOD. PULL UP A CHAIR AND READ ON... CUZ WE'VE GOT ANSWERS.

How long have you guys been around?

We’ve been shooting kiddos and family portraits since 2007. We began the crazy adventure of shooting weddings in 2009. In 2018, we stepped away from the name ‘JSi Photography’ to ‘MIKE + JULIE |  storytellers’.

What is 'a day in your life' session?

One photographer will come spend between 2 and 4 hours with you, very likely your home, and follow you around cameras in hand. We’ll artfully and honestly photograph your norm. What’s even cooler is that we’ll dive into what each person means to you so that on the day we’re there, we’re armed with what’s important to you to have in photographs. In your final collection of images, you’ll see the big stuff that happened while we were there, small details that hold SO much backstory for your family, and connections between family members that are all too familiar. The type of connections that happen naturally when no one is telling you how to pose or act.

What is a family traditions session?

Think of it as a shorter, more targeted version of ‘a day in your life’ sessions. One photographer will spend about an hour with your documenting a tradition or family event that your family LOVES to do together. Maybe it’s the annual Christmas cookie baking spree, maybe it’s pizza night, or even sprinklers in the yard! If we were to ask your kiddos what they love to do with mom and dad, I’ll bet they see it as important and that makes it worth documenting.

What is a BIRTHday story?

This session is somewhere between having birth photography and newborn portraits. You may not prefer to have every step of the birthing process documented, but you still value having the rawness of your new little one captured. We want to photograph what those first few moments you became parents. There is like those first hours as new parents. The first moment you both have to yourselves with this little nugget, as new parents. The first moment your kiddos meet their new little brother or sister.

Won’t you run out of things to photograph? My life’s so boring…

We dare you to think your life is boring once we’re done with ya. We can’t wait for you to see what we catch. There is nothing boring about your life. Even if it’s a normal “boring” day, you’ll be amazed at how much each and every image means to you because it’s you: your people, your home, your memories, your life.

I really want photos, but I hate my (skin, body, weight, fill in the blank).

I know. I really, really know. I (Julie) am a perfectionist and it used to be that when I saw a picture of myself there was always something that made me look terrible. My mom tends to be the same way. She always shoos the camera away, so I don’t have many photos of her. Then one day it hit me. Someday, she won’t be here. How many photos do I have of her?? Do I have enough? Do I have any of us together… not just from when I was little? The answer was a solemn ‘no’. I don’t have enough photos of her. I’d rather have a billion less than perfect images of her than none at all. Never ever forget that YOU are someone else’s world and they deserve to have photos of you, in all your imperfect glory!

I’m all in, but my hubby hates photo sessions.

Perfect! We don’t like normal photo sessions either! Tell your hubby that we will never make him wear something he doesn’t want to and we’ll never make him smile for the camera. He is free to watch TV in his favorite old ratty T-shirt or tinker around in the garage. We want to see and document what you get to see him doing all the time!

Y’all. I’ve got wild children. What if they don’t behave at the session?

You know, we’re going to be a novelty for about the first 20 minutes we’re there, and we’re ready for that. But then… once they realize we’re not asking them to sit still or say ‘cheese’, they’ll lose interest in us and go on with their day. By the end of our time together, we’ll feel like one of the family, pinky swear!

How do we decide on a location for the session?

The first thing we’ll do is dive in and take a walk down memory road. If at the end of our session mapping, your memories are centered around your home, then that’s where we’ll be. If your memories are centered around places that mean something to your family then that’s exactly where we need to have your session! One thing we won’t do is choose a location that doesn’t have any significant meaning for you.

What should we wear?

What would you pick out on a random Tuesday? What is comfortable and makes you feel great when you have it on? Here’s a fun idea: let your kiddos pick out their own outfits. As long as y’all GOT clothes on, we’re happy!

What would I do with my documentary photos?

This is a great question! What is your family’s go-to memory style? Are you guys a scrap book type family? One of our photo albums would be perfect. Do you love to pull out the family’s box of old photographs and pour over every one? You’ll love our keepsake box filled with loose photographs is totally your jam. Bonus! You can add memories to this box over time! Or maybe your walls are aching for some coverage. Our wall art is second to none.

Do you offer digitals?

Yep, we sure do. You can purchase one individual file, a bundle, or the whole kit and caboodle! But, for these types of images, we think to have something physical to hold in your hands and pass on to your family matters.

Can you photograph my event?

We love capturing birthday parties (moms, this is YOUR chance to set the camera down and enjoy the party for once), anniversary parties, fundraisers, awards ceremonies, luncheons, and weddings (duh!). Basically, anytime humans gather together something good is bound to happen and be worth remembering. That’s where we step in!

How do I book a session?

Your session date is reserved on our calendar once your contract is signed and your session fee is paid.

What if I have to reschedule?

Payment of your session fee reserves that day and time and no one else gets it. So, when you can’t make it, no one else gets that spot either. But we totally understand that life just happens. You get one complimentary reschedule. After that, if you still need to reschedule there is a $75 rescheduling fee.

What happens after the session?

Once your session is over, the agonizing wait begins! We’ll rush back to our office and prepare your images. Then, you’ll come in for your very own personal ordering appointment at the M+J Studio. This is when you’ll see your images for the first time, get acquainted with all of our yummy products and place your order. AND…. we’ll help you every step of the way to prepare for your ordering appointment, pinky promise.
