the

UNportrait

EXPERIENCE

real. life. heart.

You might be asking yourself, “What’s The UNportrait Experience?” The UNportrait Experience, or what we like to jokingly call our “anti-portrait” session, is a much-needed alternative to what most people think about when getting their family pictures taken. This experience does a great job at capturing what your family looks like, but it does a better job capturing what your life FEELS like. Which is something we think is missing from family pictures these days. If you’re looking for family photos with a bit more life and meaning than your yearly family portrait is giving you, then be sure to keep on reading.

Does this scenario sound familiar? It’s almost time to head out for family pictures and somebody spills juice on the outfit you meticulously selected. Your spent hours putting everyone’s outfits together! What do we do now? Now, you’re a little more tense than you wish you were, but you move onward. Once everyone arrives you realize how tired and just ’not in the mood’ the troops are. Including dad. You NEED dad to rally because everyone knows he has the power to cheer everyone up! As you’re watching your kiddos get their pictures taken you can see just how fake their smiles are. UGHHHHHH. I guess this year’s photos’ll be just like last year’s…

Moms… We hear you. You’ve got enough on your plate. Why cause yourself all that stress? With this documentary experience, we strip out these obstacles and boil it down capturing the essence of who your family is what life is like right here, today.

No more posing, coordinated outfits, making sure everyone is smiling at the camera, basically... no more daunting (fun-killing) expectations!

We’re talking about family pancake making on Saturday mornings, an afternoon at grandma and grandpa’s house, your nightly bedtime routine, or even just a “normal” Monday afternoon in the living room… and hopefully someone is wearing a cape, or at very least, pants! We are also talking about how your little one crinkles his toes when he snuggles on your lap (which is happening less and less these days). That “first time on a bike without training wheels” face. The everyday life we all take for granted now, but worry we’ll forget once this season has passed. We’re talking about real life, real moments, real smiles (because they’ll happen naturally), real memories, real family stories… your family stories!

Super quick: make a list of 3 people in your life that mean something to you. Jot down a few of your favorite memories for each person. Next, circle the memories where you have photos that really illustrate those memories, where when you look back you’re pulled right back into that moment. If your number of circles comes up shorter than you wish, The UNportrait Experience is the perfect solution.

Think of The UNportrait Experience as an insurance policy for the future. Yes, you’re going to LOVE these images now. But later? They will have immeasurably increased in value. Just pull out any picture from your own childhood and you instantly know the value of seeing now what you felt then.

Years down the road you will have long forgotten what breakfast with your 5-year-old was like, her bare feet in Super Woman pajamas, those morning snuggles, the cereal on the floor. It will all change and you hope you’ll never forget how it felt today. But, what if you busted out a pile of photographs and each one contains a whole world of memories and feelings you’d lost touch with? Wouldn’t that be worth having?

______ Does this idea of non-traditional family photos light you up?

What is The UNportrait Experience?

One photographer will come spend 1, 2, or 3 hours with you (your choice), very likely your home, and document your day, hunting for storytelling moments. We’ll artfully and honestly photograph your norm. What’s even cooler is that we’ll dive into what is meaningful to YOU so that on the day we’re there, we know what matters most to you so we can capture it in photographs. In your final collection of images, you’ll see the big stuff that happened while we were there, the small details that hold SO much backstory for your family, and those personal connections between family members. We’re aiming to capture the type of connections that happen naturally when no one is telling you how to pose or act.

My life’s so boring… won’t you run out of things to photograph?

We dare you to think your life is boring once we’re done with ya. We can’t wait for you to see what we catch. There is nothing boring about your life. Even if it’s a normal “boring” day, you’ll be amazed at how much each and every image means to you because it’s you: your people, your home, your memories, your life.

I really want photos, but I hate my (skin, body, weight, fill in the blank).

I know. I really, really know. I (Julie) am a perfectionist and it used to be that when I saw a picture of myself I always found something that made me look terrible. My mom tends to be the same way. She always shoos the camera away, so I don’t have many photos of her. Then one day it hit me. Someday, she won’t be here. How many photos do I have of her?? Do I have enough? Do I have any of us together… not just from when I was little? The answer was a solemn ‘no’. I don’t have enough photos of her. I’d rather have a billion less than perfect images of her than none at all. Never ever forget that YOU are someone else’s world and they deserve to have photos of you, in all your imperfect glory!

I’m all in, but my hubby hates photo sessions.

Perfect! He’s going to love this experience then! Tell your hubby that we will never make him wear something he doesn’t want to and we’ll never ever force him to smile for the camera. He is free to watch TV in his favorite old ratty T-shirt, tinker around in the garage, or daddy it up wrestling with the kiddos. We want to see and document what you love to see him doing all the time!

Y’all. I’ve got wild children. What if they don’t behave at the session?

We’re going to be a novelty to the kiddos for about the first 20 minutes we’re there, and we’re ready for that. But then… once they realize we’re not asking them to sit still or say ‘cheese’, they’ll lose interest in us and go on with their day. By the end of our time together, we’ll feel like one of the family, pinky swear!

How do we decide on a location for our UNportrait Experience?

The first thing we’ll do is dive in and take a walk down memory lane. If at the end of our brainstorming, your memories are centered around your home, then that’s where we’ll suggest. If your memories are centered around places that mean something to your family then that’s exactly where we need to document you! One thing we won’t do is choose an arbitrary location that doesn’t have any significance to you.

Will you be posing us for this UNportrait Experience?

No! There is no posing, at all, ever with this experience. There’s no bothering with coordinated outfits, no lining up and saying ‘cheese’. This is the opposite of all that.

What would I do with my documentary photos?

This is a great question! What is your family’s go-to memory style? Are you guys a scrapbook type family? One of our photo books would be perfect. Do you love to pull out the family’s box of old photographs and pour over every one? Our keepsake box filled with loose photographs is totally your jam. Bonus! You can add memories to this box over time. Or, perhaps your walls are aching for some coverage. We have 6 wall collections to choose from!

Do you offer digitals?

Yep, we sure do. You can purchase one individual file, a bundle, or the entire collection! But we love helping our clients create real art to enjoy and eventually pass on to family.

Can you photograph my event?

We love capturing birthday parties (moms, this is YOUR chance to set the camera down and enjoy the party for once), anniversary parties, fundraisers, awards ceremonies, and luncheons. Basically, anytime humans gather together something good is bound to happen and be worth remembering. That’s where we step in! The best way to get more info is to fill out our contact form so we can send you a custom quote.

How do I book?

Your date/time is reserved on our calendar once your contract is signed and your session fee is paid.

What if I have to reschedule?

Payment of your session fee reserves that day and time. So, when you can’t make it, no one else gets that spot either. But, we totally understand that life just happens. You get one complimentary reschedule. After that, if you still need to reschedule there is a $75 rescheduling fee.

What happens after you document my family?

This is when the agonizing wait begins! We’ll rush back to our office and prepare your images while you sit back and relax, knowing you’ve completed the hardest part. You’ll hop on Zoom for your very own image reveal and product ordering session. This is when you’ll see your images for the first time (you’ll already be acquainted with all your product options), and place your order. We’ll help you every step of the way to prepare for your ordering session, pinky promise.
