tips for picking the best photo session location in Overland Park Kansas City

What Makes a Great Location?

What makes a great location for MIKE + JULIE | storytellers?

Meet the Marriotts. We’ve been incredibly blessed to watch their story unfold since their engagement session! And, their most recent family session just so happened to be a near-perfect location. This spot has so much going on… all the cool backgrounds and a ton of variety, all while being a safe place for kiddos to run around.

So what are we looking for when we pick a location for your session?

First, good lighting. It’s ALWAYS about lighting before anything else with us. We are natural light photographers. God’s light is the best light in our opinion 🙂

For us, good light depends on the style of the shoot we’re headed into. If it’s a family session, we want lots of open shade with even lighting, just like you see in the images from the Marriotts. We don’t want a single family member to have wonky shadows or splotchy bits of sunlight across their faces. But… if it’s a senior, dancer, or even an UNportrait session, that opens up a whole world of exciting and unique lighting possibilities for us. Think fun silhouettes, dramatic window light, and even direct light can create amazing images when used the right way. Every location, day, time of day, and even time of year creates unique lighting situations. And a great photographer knows how to advise you on finding the right kind of light for your photo shoot.

Second, great aesthetics. It’s gotta be a cool-looking spot, amirite? Unique backgrounds, fun, and cool textures. This is where trusting your photographer’s vision comes in. whether it’s the artful lines of architecture to frame the subject in the picture or the soft look of a field of flowers, we can see the potential in many places. But it all depends on the style of photography we’re seeking to create. Our favorite thing is finding a spot where we can change up the look and create some variety just by moving a few steps or turning a corner.

Are there any locations around KC you thought could make a cool background for a session?x

Third, your ability to feel comfortable. Will this be a session with littles? We want a location away from traffic and other hazards so that parents can feel good about kiddos moving around a bit. Are you comfortable in front of others? Sometimes, just stepping in front of the camera can be a hurdle to overcome. If you are someone who feels a little too on display when a lot of people are around, let’s pick a spot with some built-in privacy and less foot traffic.

If you’re considering photos soon, we’d love to get to know you and guide you to the perfect spot for your session. Drop us an email to get your photo session experience started. We’d love to create a personal and perfect experience for you!

Blessings~MIKE + JULIE
